Love In Action!

This last week I went with our youth group on our annual youth mission trip. Over the years, my pastor husband and myself on been on quite a few trips such as this, with youth and adults. We have always been blessed by these trips and have seen some wonderful projects accomplished, with the help of God and the hard work that comes from loving, determined souls.

This year over a dozen churches came together and stayed at Butler University, in Indianapolis. Every morning we would disperse throughout the city and work on several projects, for The Boys and Girls Clubs, local churches, nursing homes, individual homes of folks who just can't do things the way they used to, and for the Salvation Army.

The group that I was assigned to went to a salvation army location. Their summer program fed the local families in the area lunch, had a devotion time and then open gym time. This gave the children in the neighborhood something constructive to do during the summer and also made sure they had at least one good meal a day.

We went in to help by painting a few walls, clean some carpet and windows. Help cook and serve the lunch and snack. But that was nothing. The most important and fun thing we did was be with the kids in the afternoon and talk about God's love. The theme with this was, no matter what a person did, God would not stop loving them and He would always be there for them when they called out to Him. I could see in some of the young ones eyes how important it was to know that someone would always be there for them.

The staff at this facility was a wonderful example of God's love in action. They loved these kids with a passion that we don't see enough of. Yes at times some of the youth that came could be a handful, but that did not deter them. They fixed what ever was going on and went right on loving and serving. I know my heart and the hearts of the others that came with me were touched. You could see God shining through these men and women, with an unfailing love that would not stop. They were the epitome of these verses in Corinthians 13.....

1 Corinthians 13 The Message (MSG)

The Way of Love

13 If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.
If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing.
3-7 If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

The Friday we were there was the last day of this summer program.  Tears could be seen in the eyes of some. It was sad for us too, because it was our last day as well. So you can imagine how upsetting it was for the one's who had been there all summer. But there were smiles too because they had been with, and had been taken care of, by some of the most loving people I have ever met. What a wonderful summer these kids had.

I thank God for the friends we made there and for the chance to see His love in action.

Blessings!

Grandma's Touch

This morning I sat out on the front porch, wrapped in a blanket because of the early chill. As I sat there I got to thinking about Rodney's grandmother. We now have her patio furniture, from their back porch, on our front porch. The frames were yellow, which is not us, so I painted them a hammered pewter. This has seemed to help make the flowered cushions seem more modern. No way, right now, that we can afford to replace all the cushions. But maybe I don't really want to. We would lose some of Grandma if we did, because as much as Grandpa loved his tools, Grandma loved flowers.

She loved them so much she even worked at a florist. I am not sure how many weddings from the family she worked on, but I know she made the bouquet for mine and Rodney's wedding. Her front yard was beautiful with wonderful flower beds and her porch was decorated with pots filled with gorgeous combinations of flowers.

She even had a flowered couch in her living room. Beautiful flowers were just her thing. Grandma was just like her flowers. A beautiful woman, inside and out. Sweet natured, gentle with the touch, seemed filled with wisdom and everyone loved her. I think I was really drawn to Rodney's grandmother because she was so much like mine. Grandma Inez was beautiful inside and out too. She loved to grow things, she was as gentle as she was beautiful and I can't think of anyone who didn't just love her to pieces.

My grandmother loved my twin sister and myself more than I can even say. She was even willing to raise us from age two till seven. She almost had a nervous break down when my Dad remarried and we moved out. I have to say that all I remember from my grandmother is softness, gentleness, love and teaching. She was always trying to get us to learn to be self sufficient.

Whenever I am doing all the girly grooming things and a bit of pain becomes involved, such as a tangle in my hair, I can just hear her say, "Beauty is painful Sweetheart, but worth it". Makes me smile every time. My Dad was a wise, wise man and I learned so many things from him (that's for another blog), but Grandma just had a way of nurturing two little girls that made everything she taught us stay with us forever. One of my favorite things that has stuck is remembering how she could make everything better with her wonderful back rubs. I know my men like that I have learned this.

Both of these women loved their God. It showed in every area of their lives. Rodney says he remembers getting little notes from his grandma concerning scriptures she had been reading that she thought would be beneficial to him. My grandma was a prayer warrior from way back. She was the one who taught me that prayer can change anything.

These two were truly women who lived up to these verses.....

Ecclesiastes 8:1

Who is wise? And who knows the meaning of anything? A person’s wisdom brightens the expression; it changes the hardness of someone’s face.

James 3:13

If you are wise, live a life of steady goodness so that only good deeds will pour forth. And if you don’t brag about them, then you will be truly wise!

As I grow more and more into maturity I truly hope that I can be, if only by half, as humble and wise as they were!

Maybe we all should be wishing for the same thing.

Blessings!!!!!

Bite My Tounge

There are times as a pastor's wife that I need to bite my tongue. I know that some things are not worth stirring up and that the situation will resolve itself, more times than not, with time and patience. The hardest times for me are when things are said about my husband, that are not true, and my wife defenses want to stand up to scream to defend him.

I'm not saying that pastor's are perfect. I'm not saying that they don't make mistakes. I know that they are just as human as the rest of us. They live in glass houses, though, and are scrutinized and judged more than anyone can imagine. We spouses have some of that but we can escape behind the curtain in the glass house. But it never seems to be pulled for the pastor.

I have seen my husband go through some tough things in our marriage. Life is not always fair. But he has always held his head up and remained strong, maybe just for me, but he never seems to lose his way and can always see that things will be better tomorrow.

I do have to admit that there is one thing that does seem to bring him down a little and that is when his motives are being questioned. He does not do anything in a rash manner and thinks everything through. Sometimes this drives me crazy because there I times I want to lead with my emotions and do not want to think things through. But he never wants to do anything that would bring shame to the Lord. He is a good good man.

Every minister that I have ever known, who truly is doing the work of the Lord, is the same in this. They know that what they are doing is something they feel God is telling them to do. They all have such hard times when what they are doing is called into question.

I can't do much, except pray, about the other pastors. But I, as Rodney's wife, can and will support him whole heartedly. Because I know his heart. I know his love for his savior. I know his love for his family. I know his love for his country. And I know his love for his flock!!  He is, without a doubt, the kind of man God has called him to be!

One thing I do, when he is saddened is to go to God and seek a gentle word to say to my husband. Also I remind Rodney that as he leads he is never alone. Of course he has me, but I really mean God. I remind him (although he already knows) that He will help and see him through. Moses reminded Joshua of the very same thing......

Deuteronomy 31:7-8

Common English Bible (CEB)
Then Moses called Joshua and, with all Israel watching, said to him: “Be strong and fearless because you are the one who will lead[a] this people to the land the Lord swore to their ancestors to give to them; you are the one who will divide up the land for them. But the Lord is the one who is marching before you! He is the one who will be with you! He won’t let you down. He won’t abandon you. So don’t be afraid or scared!”

It is amazing to be with Rodney in the ministry. It is amazing to see how he is being used to lead others as they show the love of Christ. It is amazing to watch as God goes before him and protects and directs him. I know he and I wouldn't trade this life for anything, glass house and all. But because I love him so fiercely, sometimes I do have to bite my tongue!!!

So Glad To See You!

Our two dogs, Rossalynn and Breesy had to go to the kennel this last week while we were at the Methodist Annual Conference. We got home on Saturday, but after the kennel had closed and they were not open on Sunday, so I picked them up this morning. Boy were they excited to see me. They whined and cried and kept jumping up on me. Not a huge deal when the poodle puppy was doing that but when our lab decided she needed a hug, too, I was just about knocked over.

It is wonderful to be loved like that?  Unconditionally and no worries about who sees the affection. We humans forget that sometimes and are more worried about what others think than the person that we love.

Don't you think that we hold back on loving God too?  We should be loving Him as he loves us. But we all worry about is what our families will think, what our friends will think and even what people that we don't even know will think!!

In our minds we wonder, will they be convinced that we are weird or crazy if we pray in public? Or if we set our schedules so that our kids sports and activities do not interfere with our worship time, we will be thought of as fanatical? What will they think if we choose to show affection and respect to our spouses? Will we be thought of as strange because we are ethical in our working practices? Will they think we are off our rockers if we truly treat our neighbors like we should?

And we are especially shy about speaking of our God!!!! Wow, really "What would people think of us then"???

Mark 12:30

New International Version (NIV)
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a]

1 John 4:19

New International Version (NIV)
19 We love because he first loved us.

The scriptures are pretty clear...we are to love. God will not force us to love Him or anyone else, but He sure has given us a great example on how to. From creation to Calvary, He has done nothing but love us, without holding back. Why can't we try to be more like that?

Rossalynn and Breesy have followed His example. Wouldn't this world be a much better place if we all did too?

Blessings!
